March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme is “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle”. So for this week’s blog I thought I would share a few “healthy” things you can do to obtain that healthy lifestyle.
Start your day right – eat a healthy breakfast, include some lean protein, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Make a smoothie – you can mix in some fruit and vegetables (try kale and strawberries), and for the protein use milk or unsweetened yogurt. Toast a slice of whole wheat bread to round out the meal. Or try oatmeal cooked with low-fat milk, topped with sliced almonds and berries.
Healthy snacking – a healthy snack can help to sustain your energy between meals. Combo snacks are a good choice – whole-grain crackers with a low-fat cheese and some fruit, or dip apple slices into a nut butter, or try low-fat unsweetened yogurt topped with fresh fruit.
What color is your plate? You should aim to have half your meal be colorful – fruits and/or vegetables, one quarter protein, and one quarter starch. To read more click here.
Get moving! – to achieve a healthy lifestyle exercise should be part of your daily/weekly routine. You don’t have to join a gym, but you do need to get moving most days of the week – aim to exercise @ least 5 days a week, for 30-45 minutes each. Take a walk or ride a bike. Bad knees? Here’s a trick, sitting in a chair grab two water bottles or cans of soup and lift them above your head, repeatedly. I often tell clients to do this while watching a favorite TV show, lift during the program, and take a break during commercials.
